212 Clay Street

Now home to Voelkel Land Surveying, this building at 212 Clay Street (corner of Water Street), was erected in 1926 for Lee Mason & Son.  He operated a  Ford dealership here, which he sold to G. S. Cone, then a Chrysler dealership.  The architect was Adams & Adams of San Antonio; the contractor Clements & Gombert.  G.S. Cone sold his business in 1934.  It continued under new ownership for several more years.

This page has been edited  on Sept. 20, 2019, to correct an error in the history. The building was constructed for Lee Mason, not G. C. Cone, as I originally reported.

The following appeared in the Kerrville Mountain Sun, March 4, 1926
Work begun this week on new buildings for Lee Mason & Son, on both sides of Clay Street at Water, was begun Tuesday afternoon , when Clements & Gombert began pouring concrete for the foundations. Excavating was completed the later part of the week.
The contract calls for the completing of the buildings within 60 days.
Completion of these buildings will see Lee Mason & Son back into active participation in the automotive business with the agency for Chrysler Automobiles.  In addition they will handle auto accessories of all kinds, together with their filling station, and also radios.
The office and salesroom is being constructed on a triangular plot across Clay Street from the filling station, and will have a frontage of 125 feet on Water Street, 89 feet on Clay and 110 on the back side.  This triangle is caused by the bend in Water Street at this point and the back side of the building will be front of the sidewalk that is to be constructed as a continuation of the walk the other side of the building, so that pedestrians can come into Clay Street without making the curve as at present.
The other building, which will be devoted to a salesroom for used cars and also a repair shop, will be located directly behind the present filling station and will be 65 feet square.  Both the new buildings will be of tile and stucco construction, the same as the filling station, so that when completed the three will be of uniform style of architecture.
Adams & Adams are the architects of the new buildings.  Clements & Gobert are the general contractors, while W. B. Brown has the plumbing contract and the Van Horn Electric Co. will do the wiring.
